During the late 1950s, Grigory Derviz decided to change his career from a biologist to an artist. He travelled to the eastern Soviet Union where he spent time with the land based whaling stations operating there. His work from this time, including photographs, drawings and paintings graphically captures the life of these working men and women. Subsequently, Grigory Derviz spent his life creating art using multiple forms of media. He is a member of the Russian Academy of Art, and currently resides in Moscow.
While filming "The Secret Whales" we were fortunate to spend an afternoon with Grigory in 2016 where he shared with us his pictures, thoughts and memories of his early days spent with the whalers.
